[Stories] Percy Jackson, Kevin Hineline, and the Hero's Journey

And now, the final unit of our humanities class, Stories. For this unit, we have been talking about the Hero's Journey. We started with learning about Joseph Campbell and how he developed the structure of the Hero’s Journey and its twelve steps. They are Ordinary World, Call to Adventure, Refusal of the Call, Meeting the Mentor, Passing The Threshold, Allies/Enemies, Test/Challenges, Abyss, Seizing the Sword, Ultimate Ordeal, Resurrection, and Return. We also watched The Matrix, as it tells the Hero’s Journey very well and it is quite easy to draw each of the steps from it. After that, we took a trip to Armani Howard’s studio. While there, we learned a lot about him and his paintings. We also learned about how his life and subsequently his painting follow the Hero’s Journey. Armani Howard is also going to play a big part in the design of our new space, which we plan on moving into sometime next year.

For this Action Project, we have been tasked with choosing a fictional character that follows the hero’s journey, as well as a real-life hero who follows it. With these two characters, we had to explain their journey and then compare and contrast them. For my fictional character, I chose Percy Jackson. I did this because his series, Percy Jackson and The Olympians, as well as the sequel series, are some of my favorites from my childhood. I also did this because I know the first book very well. The Lightning Thief, which is the first book, follows the Hero’s Journey very well and as such it makes for a perfect example to compare to almost anything. For my real-life hero, I chose Kevin Hineline. I did this because he runs FDS Haiti, a social-eco enterprise that helps people down there. Because of that, he is considered a hero by many people. His journey also follows the Hero’s Journey fairly well. These two are obviously very different. One is a teenager that fights monsters, and one is an adult that builds stoves and briquettes for people that need them. But they are similar, in that, they are both doing their best to save the world. This slideshow will go more in-depth about their journeys.
