[Drama] The Racist's Pawn

It is now time for the final Action Project of my Humanities course, Drama. In this last unit, we have been reading the play, A Raisin in the Sun. The theme for this unit has been matriarchs. In  A Raisin in the Sun, there is a matriarch named Lena Younger, known in the play as Mama. She is the eldest Younger and following her husband's death, her wisdom has made her the leader of the house. For this Action Project, we learned about the Greek chorus, which is essentially the audience’s direct connection to the performance through a commentary on and to the actors and a little bit of humor mixed in. We were tasked with taking a short scene from A Raisin in the Sun and a character who is in that scene and creating a Greek chorus to go along with it. I chose Lindner, a white ambassador from Clybourne Park. He could be racist, we don’t know, but it appears he is not. Unfortunately, the vast majority of people in Clybourne Park are, so he is representing a racist cause. This all is addressed in my chorus, and here it is!

In conclusion, this was a very fun Action Project! I really enjoyed working on a Greek chorus as that has always been a fascinating and hilarious part of theater for me. I really enjoyed A Raisin in the Sun and I like the message it is trying to send. It is a sign of a really good play if it was written in the 50s and isn't hyper offensive today. If I were to do something different in this Action Project, it would definitely have been to add more humor to my chorus, as that is one of my favorite parts! Other than that, this was a very fun unit and Action Project! This is my final humanities Action Project of the year, so stay tuned for next year!
